  • Queen Sofia presented the 58th edition of the “Queen Sofia Prize for Painting and Sculpture” at the Casa de Vacas Cultural Center in Madrid’s Buen Retiro Park, to the creator César Orrico Méndez, for his work “Night.”
The event began with a welcome address by the general secretary of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors and secretary of the jury, María Dolores Barreda, who gave the floor successively to the director of Institutional Relations and Public Policies of Google Spain, Miguel Escassi, and to the president of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, José Gabriel Astudillo.
Next, Queen Sofía presented the diplomas to the four finalists: José María Pinto Rey; Mario Manckey (Mario Fernández López); David Montes Alonso; and María Oriza Pérez; and to the winner of this 58th edition of the “Queen Sofía Prize for Painting and Sculpture”, César Orrico Méndez, for his work “Night”, a lost wax bronze sculpture measuring 100 x 32 x 45 cm, in which he offers a transversal look from the classical paradigm to modernity, a contemporary figuration that fuses originality in representation with the fundamental principles of sculpture.
Following the awards ceremony, Queen Sofia toured the exhibition with the finalist works from this call for the 58th "Queen Sofia Prize for Painting and Sculpture", to which almost 400 works by artists from Spain and many other countries such as Mexico, Italy and Germany were submitted. The Jury made a selection of 72 works that make up the exhibition, 45 paintings and 27 sculptures, all of them of great quality, which bring together very different concepts and styles.
Finally, a photograph was taken of Her Majesty Queen Sofia with the award-winning César Orrico and his work.
On this occasion, Queen Sofía was accompanied by the Director General of Heritage and Fine Arts, Isaac Sastre de Diego; the members of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors; the Councilor President of the Districts of Latina and Hortaleza, Alberto Serrano; the Councilor President of the Districts of Moncloa-Aravaca and Usera, Loreto Sordo; the Councilor President of the District of Retiro, Santiago Saura; the Councilor President of the District Ciudad Lineal, Ángel Niño; the Director of the Casa de Vacas Cultural Center, María Dolores Chamero; the former Mayor of Madrid, José María Alvarez del Manzano; the members of the Jury; and guests.
The 58th Reina Sofía Prize for Painting and Sculpture is endowed with 10.000 euros for a single work, having already become a benchmark and one of the best-endowed prizes in Spain, which has the collaboration of the technological giant GOOGLE, thus reflecting the commitment of these institutions to art and culture. The exhibition of selected works includes 428 paintings and 24 sculptures.
The Prize is endorsed by a jury, in an artistic fusion, in which tradition and modernity are perfectly mixed, in a combination between classical and avant-garde artists, trying to create a connection between painting and sculpture, classical and urban.
On this occasion, the Jury was chaired by José Gabriel Astudillo López, president of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, with María Dolores Barreda Pérez, general secretary of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, acting as secretary; both with voice but no vote, and the following members were Josetxo Soria Checa, Google analyst for Public Policies in Spain and Portugal; Javier Sierra, journalist and writer; Tomás Paredes, art critic and AICA Awards Committee; Eduardo Naranjo, painter, sculptor, engraver and Academician of the Royal Academy of Arts and Letters of Extremadura; Antonio López, painter, sculptor and Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando; Paula Varona, painter; Ricardo Sanz, painter; María Dolores Chamero Moyano, director of the Casa de Vacas Cultural Center; Wifredo Rincón, from the Institute of History, CSIC and former president of the AEPE; José Luis Fernández, sculptor; Sebas Velasco, painter; Juan Antonio Sanchez, PichiAvo, painter; and Juan Manuel Lopez Reina, vice president of the AEPE.
The Reina Sofía Prize for Painting and Sculpture is awarded to a single painting or sculpture, regardless of the artist's curriculum or career, and is accompanied by a Diploma, a Medal from the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors and a cash sum of ten thousand euros.
  • Born in Spain in 1984, César Orrico is a contemporary figurative sculptor. In his work he proposes a reflection on the syncretic character of contemporary society through the representation of the human being. The reference to different periods and contexts is visible in his sculptures, which metaphorically connect time and concepts.
Orrico obtained his bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid in 2007 and complemented his specialization with postgraduate studies in Art Creation and Research. In recent years, his work has been highlighted by recognition in world-class competitions. In 2019 he received the Jean Asselbergs Prize from the Taylor Foundation of Paris and won the First Prize in Sculpture two consecutive years, 2021 and 2022, at the 15th and 16th ARC International Salon, United States. Also in 2022 his work was awarded the Mariano Benlliure Sculpture Medal. In 2023 he received the Reina Sofía Prize for Painting and Sculpture in Madrid.
Orrico has participated in notable individual and group exhibitions in cities in America, Europe and Asia, with a particular presence in the United States, France and England. His work has also been shown at prestigious contemporary art fairs and salons such as Context Art Miami, Art Wynwood, LA Art Show, Hamptons Fine Art Fair New York, London Art Fair or ST-ART Strasbourg, and his works have been included in public and private collections around the world.
