This rattlesnake looks at us with a calm and direct expression. Wrapping around itself, it seems to focus on an idea that it is about to tell us, like a revelation emanating from wisdom and knowledge.

Nahuales is a special selection of Oaxacan Alebrije, commissioned by Marakame to the best modern alebrije authors. Since 2017 we have been looking for and collecting pieces that deal with extraordinary animals —also called tonas—, representatives of the imagination and the Zapotec culture.

Each piece is hand painted on copal wood carving (Bursera, spp). This tree grows around the communities of San Martín Tilcajete and San Antonio Arrazola, belonging to the Zapotec region of the State of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. The use of cedar wood is also common, due to its characteristics.

The elaboration of these works may require up to 15 months, depending on their dimensions and details. Different machetes, gouges and knives are used to achieve its finish. The drying process is carried out patiently and in detail to achieve an excellent material.
