Since 2017 we have been personally directing the process of Zapotec figures whose original name is “tonas” or “nahuales”.

This special selection of Oaxacan Alebrije commissioned by Marakame to the best authors of modern alebrije, is hand painted on wood carving of the copal tree (Bursera, spp), which grows around the communities of San Martín Tilcajete and San Antonio Arrazola, towns in the Zapotec region of the State of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. Cedar wood carving is also commonly used due to the characteristics of this wood.

With warm colors that evoke passion and energy, this deer is adorned with intricate details made up of spirals that give it a touch of mysticism and depth. The Zapotec symbols that adorn the figure are a celebration of the region's rich cultural tradition, merging spirituality and connection to nature into a detailed pattern that invites contemplation. The soft texture of the wood and hand painting using traditional techniques create a unique and emotive visual effect.

The spirals that adorn the deer's body seem to dance in the air, giving movement and life to this handcrafted piece. It is as if the alebrije itself were animated by the energy of the Zapotec culture, transmitting its history and spirituality to whoever observes it.
