For the Wixárika people, the puma is not merely an inhabitant of the Sierra Madre Occidental: it is a sacred being, a silent presence that guards and transmits the voice of fire. In ceremonial thought, fire not only warms, it speaks. And when that voice needs to be heard from the spiritual world, it is the puma that embodies it. Therefore, the puma is seen as a profound counselor and guide, close to the wisdom of the marakame.

This bust-shaped sculpture, designed by Arte Marakame, was made in Mexico and covered with Czechoslovakian crystal beads by the visionary Wixárika artist Ramona de la Cruz, originally from Tatei Kié, San Andrés Cohamiata, Jalisco. The chromatic design, unusually based on a white background, gives the piece a sober, clean, almost ritualistic luminosity. Over this base, symbolic patterns develop in earthy tones, browns, wine, and black, evoking the earth, the night, and contained fire.

The composition of figures—five- and six-pointed stars, eyes of God, solar flowers, spirals—is not random. Each motif is part of the Wixárika visual language, a network of symbols that connects the material and spiritual worlds. The puma, the bearer of these forms, thus becomes a body of knowledge: an animal that not only observes, but also transmits.

Unlike other dynamic figures, this puma bust is still, frontal, attentive. It doesn't move: it presides. Its gaze doesn't evade, it gently confronts. It is presence and testimony. Thus, this work embodies a unique quality within contemporary Indigenous art: the fusion of aesthetic restraint and spiritual depth.

The sacred puma reminds us that there are forces that don't need to speak to be understood. That fire also has silence. And that from the mountains, even in the hidden, the ancient advisors continue to watch.
