Metzeri Yuawi Neixa — “the one who dances to the rhythm of the moon”

Work created in the Sierra Madre Occidental by Benjamín de la Cruz, composed of thousands of glass beads placed one by one, following a visual and ritual logic of the nierika.

In this piece, the presence of Metzeri (the moon) is manifested through a palette of whites, grays, and blacks, alluding to its nature as a mirror of the sun. In the Wixárika worldview, the moon does not possess its own light: its radiance is a reflection of Tau (Father Sun), creating a balance between the visible and the veiled.

The neutral tones create an atmosphere of introspection and cyclical rhythm, where light doesn't intrude but rather subtly suggests itself. Thus, the composition evokes the lunar dance as a movement of reflection and transformation, in which solar energy translates into a soft luminosity, regulating nighttime, cycles, and fertility.

More than an absence of color, this work proposes an aesthetic of reflection, where the moon acts as a sacred surface that receives, contains and returns the light of the origin.
