The Feathered Serpent accompanies this serene creature that shows us with its hands two more presences. It seems to offer us a choice, although it also presents us with the simultaneity of life and its connections. That is what the Alebrijes are about: the diversity and coexistence of living beings.

Nahuales is a special selection of Oaxacan Alebrije, commissioned by Marakame to the best modern alebrije authors. Since 2017 we have been looking for and collecting pieces that deal with extraordinary animals —also known as tonas—, representatives of the Zapotec imagination and culture.

Each piece is painted by hand, on copal wood carving (Bursera, spp). This tree grows around the communities of San Martín Tilcajete and San Antonio Arrazola. They belong to the Zapotec region of the State of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. The use of cedar wood is also common, due to its characteristics.

The elaboration of these works may require up to 15 months, depending on their dimensions and details. Different machetes, gouges and knives are used to achieve its finish. The drying process is carried out patiently and in detail to achieve an excellent material.
