In this ceramic piece from Mata Ortiz, the Day of the Dead is represented, one of the most important traditions in Mexico, where our ancestors are honored. In this case, the first ceramists are honored, who laid the foundation for subsequent generations in Chihuahua.

The tradition is danced to the rhythm of the accordion and guitar while the skulls wrap a pole with ribbons that weave with their movements. High in the sky, the moon rabbit covers the town with its dark, protective mantle. The hills, the desert plants, the architecture: it's all here, in this festive scene.

  • Héctor Javier Martínez (Mata Ortiz, 1984) burst onto the Mata Ortiz pottery scene in 2008, with the characteristic style that distinguishes him to this day: the motifs of the night and day of the dead, in a model very Mexican and personal graphic. This was the result of a conversation he had with the well-known American collector Steve Rose. Héctor has been winner of the National Ceramic Award in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco in 2014, and has received important recognitions in the Annual Ceramic Competition in Mata Ortiz. He continues his work by collaborating with his partner Gabriela Pérez, with whom he shares credits in the signing of his pieces.
