Work of the Wixárika artist Benjamín López de la Cruz, mawaxira represents a particular ceremonial moment of life and death, of deep prayer. In the community of Tateikie or San Andrés Coamiata, the relationship established between families and livestock is not merely utilitarian. During the sacrifice of a calf, a ceremony is performed that consists of the lighting of candles and prayers, while the life is released from the animal. With his death will come great good for the house, his whole body will be treated with honor, for food and other ceremonies. This also benefits the mythical animals, the stars and the gods that inhabit the territory. This is the passage that is narrated in the image offered by the work.

mawaxira was awarded the first and only prize awarded by the Huichol Art Biennial in its third issue (2022). The Biennial is an initiative of Jorge Martínez and every two years it brings together professionals in the study of the Huichol culture, artists and design studios that collaborate with the Wixaritari communities.

The Biennial exhibition is made up of 30 pieces: 15 of them are made with glass beads and the others with yarn, whether they are sculptural or wall pieces. The formation of the jury is carried out at the invitation of an artist from the Wixárika communities, and people from the academic communities of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the National Institute of Anthropology and History.

In this way, the qualifying jury of 5 members decides on all the participating pieces of the Biennial, based on 5 criteria: skill in the elaboration of the works, relationship between the work and the Wixárika culture, the use of traditional materials, discursive quality. and a personal opinion. mawaxira it was the best qualified work, which earned it the distinction of the only prize offered by the Biennial.
