Since 2017 we have been personally directing the process of Zapotec figures whose original name is “tonas” or “nahuales”.

This special selection of Oaxacan Alebrije commissioned by Marakame to the best authors of modern alebrije, is hand painted on wood carving of the copal tree (Bursera, spp), which grows around the communities of San Martín Tilcajete and San Antonio Arrazola, towns in the Zapotec region of the State of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. Cedar wood carving is also commonly used due to the characteristics of this wood.

In this alebrije, the artist has created a unique design that combines natural elements and vibrant colors. The body is painted bright blue, with the jaguar's characteristic spots and a green stripe that crosses its back. On the stomach, there is a green spiral that adds a touch of mysticism to this piece.

The back legs are painted orange, while the front ones are painted pink, creating an interesting contrast with the predominant blue. The texture of the wood and the hand painting with traditional techniques provide a unique and emotional visual effect. The details of Zapotec symbols reflect the cultural richness of the region, making this piece a unique and valuable work of art.
