Niwetsika Tatei Yuimari — “the one who blossoms from the mother corn”

This 120 x 120 cm artwork was created in Tateikie, Sierra Madre Occidental, by the Wixárika artist Matilde de la Cruz. Composed of more than half a million glass beads, placed one by one with epoxy glue, this piece embodies the technical and symbolic complexity of ritual art.

The work represents the drum festival (Tatéi Neixa), one of the fundamental ceremonies of the Wixárika calendar, where the sound of the drum articulates the communication between the human and the sacred, and corn —as a living entity— is reaffirmed as origin and sustenance.

“Niwetsika Tatei Yuimari” is not only a visual composition, but a nierika: a portal of vision where the ancestral memory of the mother corn flourishes and the continuity of life in balance with the universe is manifested.
