This circular work, crafted from micro-pressed glass beads by the marakame and visionary artist Sergio Bautista—originally from La Laguna, in San Andrés Cohamiata, Jalisco—represents one of the most intense and luminous expressions of Wixárika ceremonial art. Precisely applied one by one to wood and secured with special epoxy, the beads form a design that emanates warmth and symbolic structure.

From the golden center, like the pollen at the heart of the peyote flower (hikuri), a flower of fire opens: a visual expansion that pulses with spiritual force. It is not an abstract design; it is a sacred organism. Each layer that springs from that center is made up of symbols that coexist in the mythological universe of the Wixárika people: cornfields, ears of corn, deer faces, rabbits, lizards, scorpions, and ancestral butterflies. All of them are tutelary beings, guardians, and messengers of the invisible.

The color palette—bright reds, vibrant oranges, solar yellows—represents not only fire, but also ceremonial time: day, song, dance, prayer.

Arte Marakame is committed to collaborating directly with artists and marakate like Sergio Bautista, so that works like this are not decontextualized or treated as ornamentation, but rather recognized in their ceremonial, aesthetic, and communal dimension. Each acquisition is not just an art transaction: it is an act of cultural reciprocity that directly supports the creator and their family, strengthening the continuity of their tradition.

This piece is, literally, a flower that never stops burning. An ancient fire expressed today in a new light.
