Since 2017 we have been personally directing the process of Zapotec figures whose original name is “tonas” or “nahuales”.

This special selection of Oaxacan Alebrije commissioned by Marakame to the best authors of modern alebrije, is hand painted on wood carving of the copal tree (Bursera, spp), which grows around the communities of San Martín Tilcajete and San Antonio Arrazola, towns in the Zapotec region of the State of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. Cedar wood carving is also commonly used due to the characteristics of this wood.

This Huaniisi Elephant Alebrije is a stunning piece of art that combines the tradition of Mexican alebrijes with Zapotec symbolism. The mostly white alebrije is a tribute to purity and innocence, while the black and blue-gray details add depth and complexity.

The spiral that runs from the head to the center of the elephant's body creates a dynamic and exciting visual effect. The textured details of the Zapotec symbols on the alebrije's body add a layer of deep meaning and cultural richness. The alebrije is in a walking pose, as if it is exploring the terrain and discovering new horizons. The way the elephant's trunk makes a sound is a special touch that adds movement and life to the piece.
