Since 2017 we have been personally directing the process of Zapotec figures whose original name is “tonas” or “nahuales”.

This special selection of Oaxacan Alebrije commissioned by Marakame to the best authors of modern alebrije, is hand painted on wood carving of the copal tree (Bursera, spp), which grows around the communities of San Martín Tilcajete and San Antonio Arrazola, towns in the Zapotec region of the State of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. Cedar wood carving is also commonly used due to the characteristics of this wood.

An impressive and exciting piece of art that reflects the energy and power of this species. The aggressive stance of this alebrije invites the viewer to feel the fury and passion that emanates from it.

The hippo's open mouth displays a row of bright yellow teeth, adding a touch of danger and menace. The dark wood tone and black details create a dramatic and powerful effect.

The hippo's legs are painted in deep blue, with red cuts that give it a touch of energy and movement. The green line that runs through the alebrije's head is an interesting element that adds an additional layer of complexity and depth to the piece.
